No Access to Justice and Kids Can’t Wait

The Ontario family court shutdowns have created a crisis for women and children. Restricting cases heard to those that are “urgent” has pushed those who have been abused through domestic violence and the non-payment of child support even further to the margins than they already were - which is really saying something! Over 90% of support recipient parents are women. Single mother-headed households are the poorest in Canada. Poverty is a silent killer. When we talk about the broken systems that have been laid bare by the pandemic, why aren’t we talking about how women and children are being left struggling to survive while the courts act like they can simply wait as long as TWO MORE YEARS (an actual estimate) to protect and provide them with the money for support to which children are legally entitled??
