Far reaching effects of COVID such as post-COVID syndrome and PTSD - healthcare/front line and residents of retirement homes and LTC
Fri Apr 23 2021
I contracted COVID at a retirement home where I was working in an emergency situation. Close to 20 deaths and 100 positive COVID cases. Residents left in dire straights for days without food and care and were not independently able to care for themselves. Families were not allowed into the facility to see the needs and environment where their family members were suffering. Residents dying without being able to hold their families hands, not knowing the staff that were caring for them.
Staff are living with the memories of the conditions of the residences and the residents, beyond what should ever be seen in Canada. Horrifying. Frontline and essential carers being diagnosed with depression, anxiety and PTSD from the traumatic end of lives of residents and trying to help them.
10% of COVID positive healthcare now living with post-covid syndrome and not able to work.
Government needs to have stringent regulations for infection control in retirement living and long term care. Paid sick days are needed. Paid days off if a family member in the same household is tested to be positive.
