Are you coming to intubate me?
Wed Apr 21 2021
I was on service as the critical care response team MD, and I was rounding on some of the COVID-19 patients we had been following. When I walked into the room of our second patient, a woman who we saw the night before for a rapid increase in her oxygen requirements, and I introduced myself as the ICU doctor, she burst into tears and said, "are you coming to intubate me?" I will never forget the fear in her eyes. Thankfully, she was getting better and didn't need intubation.
